Our Pitch

Our Mothers and Us (OMUS) is a 501(c)(3) tax-exempt nonprofit organization in Arizona. We aim to increase awareness and facilitate transparent discussion surrounding maternal health, parenting, and social issues affecting the Black community. Our ultimate goal is to reduce the disparities (differences) in maternal, infant, and child health, which negatively impact Black women and families.

Our start

OMUS began in 2018 as a campaign project on Instagram in participation of the Black Mamas Matter Alliance’s (BMMA) Black Maternal Health Week held April 17-24th. The Instagram page featured video snippets of interviews, where these interviews explored Black women’s experiences during pregnancy, labor, and birth; breastfeeding; perinatal education and resources; as well as, their perceptions about maternal health disparities and birth inequity in the United States.

our direction

Today, OMUS continues this dialog across the Valley through local research projects, community workshops, community outreach, events, and other collaborative ventures.
